WEDDERBURN
Situated on State Highway 85, the settlement of Wedderburn is close to the Otago Central Rail Trail. Originally a coach and wagon
stop, Wedderburn as the next terminus on the Central Otago Railway, was headquarters for the Public Works Department during construction of the section of the line leading to the Ida Valley.
With the usual array of small commercial enterprises and a government tree nursery in the White Sow Valley, Wedderburn was a busy community. Today, Wedderburn is still a stopover for the traveller, but the commercial enterprises are all gone, only a shearing
contractor and an apiarist remaining. However, the Wedderburn Tavern still dispenses hospitality and across the highway is the first Golf Course in the World to open in the
new Millenium. This nine hole course provides its own unique challenges and the nearby Backpackers Lodge provides accommodation for the visitor. |
