THE COMMUNITY (Population 1800)

The area is primarily a farming community, mainly sheep and beef, though latterly, deer farming and dairying have made considerable inroads. A further diversification is horticulture, with a number of people planting peony roses, a species well suited to this colder climate.  Forestry has been part of the Maniototo since before 1900 and the magnificent Black Forest and the Naseby Forest have well established tracks for walking and sheltered picnic sites. Because of their longer growing period, due to the colder climate, timber from Naseby Forest trees is renowned for its strength.
