Ranfurly is the largest town in Maniototo and provides an exceptional amount of entertainment and services. Named after the 15th Governor General of New Zealand, Ranfurly became the central point of the Central Otago Railway line when it bisected the Maniototo Plain. County offices, banks and other services were moved from Naseby to Ranfurly and from the 1930′s the town developed rapidly. The detrimental effects of the closing of the railway have been overshadowed by the success of the Otago Central Rail Trail.
